Second Chance Education Program

The Unique Foundation, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning, successfully implemented a Second Chance Education Program lasting four months. This program was designed to support women and girls who missed out on educational opportunities or faced obstacles that hindered them from completing their education during traditional school years.

The initiative primarily targeted individuals who left school due to financial constraints, family responsibilities, or personal challenges, providing them with tailored learning opportunities to improve learning outcomes and promote gender equality. Originally planned to benefit 70 out-of-school and vulnerable in-school girls and young women in Kanifing Municipal Council, West Coast Region, The Gambia, the project exceeded expectations, reaching 132 participants:

  • 111 women and girls
  • 19 males
  • 2 Persons with Disabilities (PWD)

Key Program Features Learning Sessions

  • Weekly contact sessions totaling 96 hours over the program’s duration.

Primary Focus Groups

  1. Dropouts and School Leavers: Young women and girls who discontinued education due to financial constraints, family responsibilities, early marriages, or other circumstances.
  2. Single Mothers: Women and girls raising children alone, facing challenges in pursuing education due to caregiving responsibilities.
  3. University Admission: Young women and girls who completed secondary education (Grade 12) but did not meet university admission requirements.

Key Activities and Achievements

The program achieved its objectives through the following activities:

  1. Human Rights, Life Skills, and GBV Prevention: Educated 70 girls and young women on human rights, life skills, and prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
  2. Legal Services Awareness: Sensitized participants about available legal services and how to access them.
  3. Baseline Assessments: Conducted a needs assessment to tailor interventions and improve learning outcomes for participants.
  4. Learning Classes: Provided educational support for 70 out-of-school girls through Second Chance Education classes.
  5. Access to Learning Resources: Facilitated access to learning facilities and resources, creating a sense of safety and belonging for vulnerable participants.
  6. Community Engagement:
    • Organized one community meeting to highlight the importance of keeping girls in school, reducing GBV, and destigmatizing adolescent motherhood.
    • Conducted parent sensitization during a school meeting.
    • Hosted a radio discussion panel on the Second Chance Education program, reaching an estimated 4,000 listeners.

The program’s success in surpassing its participant target demonstrates its impact and potential for further scalability.
